Who (or what) inspired you to become apart of the music industry?
I grew up in a Christian household so my early years of music was limited. But I was able experience a lot great music on MTV by neighborhood friends. Michael Jackson and New Kids on the Block where the two sparks in my childhood that inspired to be an artist. Around 15 years old I got my first bass guitar and that's when all made sense and never looked back.
What's your opinion on today's music industry? What do you want to bring to it?
It's pretty crazy these days. It's a love hate relationship for sure. What I would like to see is artist's work together on a more fluid level that's more about we than me. This is something I've struggled with as well but I try to lead by example and make it apart of my process. We need each other not just art but in life and it's so easy to lose sight of that.
Could you briefly describe the music-making process?
I started Ishi back in 2008 with producer and songwriter Brad Dale. He would write songs and I would write lyrics and melody. I would do the same and he would produce them out. I have stuck to this method to this day and have worked with producers all over the world. It allows the creative process to constantly evolve which is key to obtain a diverse catalog.
What message do you want your music to portray to listeners?
My theme has always been to be up lifting, introspective, and positive. This is my natural outlook on life and it's easy for me to tap into.
Is there anyone that stands out to you in offering support during your music career?
After I released my second record 6 yrs ago I met this woman that was in the music industry who took me under her wing and has been a complete angel and supporter in my life and career to this day. Such a blessing.
What are your main impulses to write music?
It varies between a dope ass beat or expressing an emotion that I must release.
Do you have a favorite piece of music? Can you tell us a bit about the story behind it?
There are so many talented artists and I listen to a lot of music so that's hard to narrow down. Here are some that I love currently:JungleStill WoozyTame ImpalaChildish Gambino Bob Moses
What's next for you in the upcoming months?
This has been a great creative year for me. Ishi has been placed in one Netflix movie called 'Otherhood' and two songs in a ABC series called the Grand Hotel. We'll be playing in Dallas on 11/2 @ Sweet Tooth Hotel which is very cool art installation event space. I have also started shoe line called Ishi and clothing line under the umbrella called Dirt x Water designs. As well as working on an all inclusive art & music retreat in Tulum, Mexico based around Ishi and Texas based artists called Piňa Güera. So I'm very excited to see where these endeavors take me.
